SOCIAL STUDIES

8th Grade

The eighth grade Social Studies curriculum begins with a unit of study of the United States and Missouri Constitutions.  A consumable book is used which can be written in and kept upon completion of this quarter.  There will be numerous quizzes throughout the quarter, with a final test on the US Constitution at the end of the quarter.  Fifty student-made question/answer note cards will be due upon completion of the Constitution study.

The last three quarters will be spent in the McDougal Littell Social Studies textbook, Creating America, 1877 to the 21st Century.  Study will begin at the period following Reconstruction and continue through modern times.  There will be a test, usually consisting of matching, multiple choice, fill in the blank, and essay question(s) at the end of each chapter.  There are no quarter projects, but most chapters will have an additional assignment to complete at home which are usually worth 10-20 points.

7th Grade

The seventh grade Social Studies curriculum is a study of American History beginning with a geography unit and continuing through the Reconstruction period following the American Civil War.  The text, published by McDougal Littell, is titled, Creating America, Beginnings through Reconstruction.  Each chapter consists generally of three to five sections of material and requires approximately two weeks for completion.  All material is read orally and discussed at length in class.  In addition to tests and homework, there will be a project assignment, equivalent to a test grade, for the first quarter of the year.  Requirements for this project will be given to the students at the beginning of this quarter; due date being approximately a week before the end of the quarter.

HOMEROOM NEWS

Welcome all of you to 8th grade.  I hope you are looking forward to a great year filled with fun as well as challenges.  For many, this is a bittersweet year, sort of the beginning of the end.  My hope is to continue to prepare students for the next level, while making many pleasant memories of time spent here at IC.
