Welcome to A.P. American History! As we take on the task of learning the ins and outs of American history, you will begin your adventure with your first assignment as an A.P. student.
You are required to read the following books:
For the book Founding Brothers, you are required to write a book review that includes answers to the following questions. And remember, a book review is NOT a book report. Your goal is to critically analyze this book.
Before reading this book, what background knowledge of the subject do you already possess? 2) By reading this book, have you learned any new information and if so, what is that new information? 3) Finally, how has your perspective changed on this particular subject? You will also evaluate the book by examining the author and the material presented. While you are reading, pay attention to how the book was organized, the writing style of the author and the author’s qualifications. Sum up your review by stating the overall worth of the book. Make sure to back up your opinion with facts.
For the book chosen from the recommended list, you will answer the following questions in the regular paper format. 1) What does this work mean to me (in my present intellectual and moral make-up)? 2) What particular aspects of my life may help me understand the work more deeply? 3) How can this book improve my understanding and widen my own insight? 4) How can my increasing understanding help me to understand the work more deeply? This paper will give you the freedom to bring in your own personal reactions to the literature read, while bringing the reader into the deeper meanings of the book.
Your reviews must be typed and double-spaced, with the following requirements:
Make sure and proofread for mistakes before turning in your papers!
Your reviews will be due on the first day of class for the 2008-2009 school year.
Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!
