Through the Elks National Foundation's Most Valuable Student scholarship contest, the dream of a college education will become a reality for 500 high school seniors in 2009. Applicants will compete for the coveted top prizes of two $60,000, two $40,000, two $20,000, two $16,000, two $12,000, four $10,000 and four $8,000 scholarships. 482 runners-up will receive $4,000 scholarships, all to be awarded over four years. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately, and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need.
